First Aid
First Aid training is, in the main, regulated by the Health & Safety Executive who appoint Approved Providers. Although there are ways of getting around this, most organisations recognise that approved training is the best for their people. And we are HSE Approved Providers.
In October 2009, the HSE changed the course structure and also reviewed their recommendations for the First Aid cover that should be organised by organisations.
What was known as the ‘Appointed Person’ one-day course does not officially exist. This term is now used for someone who is not trained in First Aid but who can take charge of a situation, call the Emergency Services etc.
The new Approved Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) is the one-day course and the old four-day has been replaced by a new 3-day First Aid at Work (FAW). Both of these have a three year expiry. The 3-day course requires a 2-day Refresher and HSE recommend that qualified First Aiders who have undertaken the course, have an annual half-day refresher.
For those people who are dealing with children, the 2-Day Paediatric First Aid training course still exists and these should comply with the OFSTED recommendations.
In addition to these HSE Approved courses, there are a range of others that cover specialist areas such as AED (Defibrillator) training and Helmsman Safety Services can also devise courses for particular requirements such as practical First Aid to back up e-learning.
Last year, the HSE also reviewed their recommendations for the First Aid cover that should be made available by organisations. The revised recommendations are as follows -
| Level of Hazard | No of Staff | Cover required |
|---|---|---|
| Low hazard e.g. offices, shops, libraries | Less than 25 | At least one ‘Appointed Person’ |
| 26-50 | At least one person trained in EFAW | |
| Over 50 | At least one person trained in FAW for every 100 employees | |
| Higher hazard e.g. light engineering, construction, warehousing, chemicals | Less than 5 | At least one ‘Appointed Person’ |
| 5-50 | At least one first-aider trained in EFAW or FAW depending on the type of injuries that might occur | |
| Over 50 | At least one first-aider trained in FAW for every 50 employed (or part thereof) |
